For your final essay, you should choose one of the following options. Warning: Do not use open web sources such as Course Hero, Shmoop, Sparknotes, Gradesaver, or Wikipedia. Doing so will result in a major deduction of points under the category of thesis and support. Compare and contrast In Cold Blood to another filmed depiction of the true crime genre, whether in feature film or TV series form. Have a debatable, persuasive claim and focus on specific points of comparison, using the Lesson in week 7 to guide your structure. Please consult MLA guidance to see how to cite television and film! For either paper, you must use primary sources (the assigned works of fiction or poetry) to support your ideas. You need to be making an original argument, and backing that argument with direct quotations from the primary texts, properly cited. Submission Instructions: Your essays should be in MLA Style and approximately 1000–1250 words, not including the Work(s) Cited page. As with most academic writing, this essay should be written in third person. Please avoid both first person (I, we, our, etc.) and second person (you, your). In the upper left-hand corner of the paper, place your name, the professor’s name, the course name, and the due date for the assignment on consecutive lines. Double space your information from your name onward, and don't forget a title. All papers should be in Times New Roman font with 12-point type with one-inch margins all the way around your paper. All paragraph indentations should be indented five spaces (use the tab key) from the left margin. All work is to be left justified. When quoting lines in literature, please research the proper way to cite short stories, plays, or poems. You should use the online APUS library to look for scholarly sources. Be careful that you don’t create a "cut and paste" paper of information from your various sources. Your ideas are to be new and freshly constructed. Also, take great care not to plagiarize.

Ethics in Epidemiological Research An Experimental Study in the Primary Prevention of Type 2 Diabetes Imagine that researchers are conducting a randomized controlled trial of a high-fiber supplement as a preventive measure in persons at increased risk of type 2 diabetes. People enrolled in the study are disease-free at the time they agree to participate in the trial, but they all have a family history of type 2 diabetes and are considered at high-risk (80%) to develop the disease during their lifetime. The 10,000 participants who start the trial are healthy individuals who are randomly allocated to receive either high-fiber supplements or placebo for several years. As you can imagine, this study will be quite expensive and will require a large infrastructure of personnel and materials to carry it out successfully. Because type 2 diabetes has reached epidemic proportions in the United States, the potential benefits of this research are important at a population level. Unfortunately, high-fiber supplements have also been shown in a few studies to be associated with the gastrointestinal blockage (which can be life-threatening) and reduced nutrient absorption, which may lead to anemia, osteoporosis, and other debilitating chronic diseases. The supplements may also reduce absorption of certain medications and cause gastrointestinal distress. The potential side effects of continuous high-fiber supplementation are only partially understood, and long-term effects are unknown. Post your initial response to at least two of the following questions: What are the potential risks and benefits to be considered when designing this study? When the side effects and long-term effects of a potential preventive measure are largely unknown, is it ethical to expose participants to these risks? Why or why not? Is it ethical to deny the possible prevention benefits of high-fiber supplements to persons in the placebo group? Why or why not? Do the potential benefits outweigh the potential risks to the participants and to society? Why or why not? Use the information above, and chose any of the two questions below and answer with the good explanation.
